FinCEN's public MSB Registrant Search publishes every active registrant's RECEIVED DATE: the date your most recent registration or renewal was received. That is the one fact this check starts from.

The exact rule, not a rule of thumb

31 CFR 1022.380(b)(2)-(3) sets registration in two-calendar-year periods, each renewal due on or before December 31 of the year before the next period starts. This check applies that rule to your own last filing date.

What is actually at stake

A lapsed registration carries a real statutory penalty, $5,000 per day under 31 USC 5330(e). It is rarely enforced as a standalone violation in FinCEN's own published enforcement record, and this site says so plainly rather than overselling the risk.

Where does the data come from?

FinCEN's own public MSB Registrant Search (msb.fincen.gov), the same export anyone can download from the registry's own Export to Excel button. See the method page for the exact download and the exact rule applied to it.

My MSB isn't showing up. Why?

A few reasons: a recent registration or renewal has not yet made it into the export FinCEN publishes, the name on file differs from what you typed, or the registration was filed under a different legal entity name. None of those are tested individually here, only reported as no match.

Does FinCEN send renewal reminders?

No. FinCEN retired its own MSB registration calculator and does not proactively remind registrants of their renewal deadline. It is on each MSB to track its own date, which is the entire reason this tool exists.

Is there a paid product here?

Do you store what I search?
